The French armies, led by Napoleon, dominated Europe through the early 19th century. The all conquering French line infantry ‘Les Bleus’ used a combination of massed columns, fast manoeuvre, and firepower to shatter the armies of Prussia, Austria, Spain and Russia, culminating in a death struggle against Wellington and Blucher’s alliance at Waterloo in 1815. Well led and confident of victory, the average French soldier swept almost all foes before them. The red coated soldiers of British Infantry formed the only force able to withstand the might of the French Army of the Napoleonic Wars. Fighting from Portugal through to Belgium, the British army and her allies finally brought the might of Napoleon’s France to its end at the Battle of Waterloo.The devastating massed volleys unleashed by the well disciplined British regimental lines proved a match for the French army on many European battlefields.
